Blessed Josephine was born to poor but honorable parents on 9 January 1625 in the village of Beniganim near Valencia, Spain and given the name Josephine Teresa at Baptism. On 25 October 1643, when she was eighteen years old, she sought and received permission to enter the Augustinian convent of Benigamin as a lay sister. There she received the name Josephine Mary of Saint Agnes.
Among her sisters in religion she was more commonly known as Mother Iñez. Though she had minimal education, she possessed a gift of counsel and a profound understanding of theology. Consequently, her advice, was sought by some of the most important and influential people of Spain.
For more than fifty years of religious life Blessed Josephine lived in simplicity, and with great devotion to serving the community. Throughout, she was imbued with a remarkable spirit of contemplative prayer. She passed from this live on the feast of her patroness, Saint Agnes, 21 January 1694. The archdiocese of Valencia began the examination of her cause for beatification which resulted in her beatification on 26 February 1888 by Pope Leo XIII.
Her confessor, Father Philip Benevento, the pastor of Beniganim, wrote an authoritative biography of Blessed Josephine Mary. The body of Blessed Mother Iñez rests in the convent which was her home for more than half a century. Her feast is observed by the Augustinian Family on the 14th of January.
